How bad backlinks can harm your SEO & Google rankings

Google's got their eye on your backlinks & they're cracking the whip

This month, Google has started rolling out an update to improve the detection of "unnatural links and neutralize any credit passed by them"

Google released a statement this month about cracking the whip on 'unnatural links' to our websites.

On December 4th Google said, "Today, we're leveraging the power of SpamBrain to neutralize the impact of unnatural links on search results.

Fighting link spam with SpamBrain - SpamBrain is our AI-based spam-prevention system. Besides using it to detect spam directly, it can now detect both sites buying links, and sites used for the purpose of passing outgoing links."

❗ What this means for your website ❗

"Our launch today, which we refer to as the December 2022 link spam update, will take about two weeks to fully roll out.

Rankings may change as spammy links are neutralized and any credit passed by these unnatural links are lost. This launch will affect all languages.

As we have always emphasized, links obtained primarily for artificial manipulation of Search rankings are link spam.

Our algorithms and manual actions aim to nullify these unnatural links at scale, and we will continue to improve our coverage."

👉 In Techno Bird words - shitty links from shitty websites for the sole purpose of getting a backlink to try and trick Google into thinking you have all these links so you must be credible and popular so you'll be 'boosted' in Google rankings WILL NOT WORK and Google will put you in the sin bin.

What's an 'unnatural link?'

"Links obtained primarily for artificial manipulation of Search rankings are link spam".

In other words - links from 'link farm' websites or websites created to serve no other purpose than to farm links.

These black-hat SEO tactics WILL harm your SEO efforts.

Google WILL penalise you by decreasing your Google rankings & visibility.

You may have spammy links and not even know it - so how do you check?

Option 1: Google Search Console > Links Report

Option 2: Use a program such as SE Ranking who provide backlink checker systems

The moral of the story is...

  • Aim to obtain backlink that come from genuine, real websites

  • Don't try to 'trick' Google by adding your website URL to fake, bullshit nothing websites in order to just get another backlink - QUALITY over QUANTITY

  • Remember - Google is watching you and your backlinking, and they aren't afraid to penalise you or make you disappear from Google rankings if you continue these black-hat SEO tactics

  • NEVER, EVER, trust an "SEO expert" who says they can "boost your SEO" by getting you tonnes of backlinks, and who don't give you any other information or tell you where the backlinks are coming from

SE Ranking is an all-in-one SEO software made simple. SE Ranking has become my absolute favourite SEO tool - it covers it all, from:

  • Keyword research

  • Keyword tracking

  • Competitor research

  • Website auditing tool

  • Backlink tracking

  • Google rank tracking, and more.

I use SE Ranking for all of my SEO clients and the reason I love it more than any other (and trust me, I've tried a lot of them!) is because of the user-interface. It's not confusing to find certain features, there are explanations for every little feature and tool, the accuracy of the keyword research tool is 100%, and their program is suitable for one-person businesses and small businesses like you and me. And, their subscriptions are AFFORDABLE, starting from $31 per month. SE Ranking is now the only SEO tool that I pay for and use as there's no need for me to use any other program because SE Ranking has it all.
